Goals

Diminish the scale of musculoskeletal problems among EU employees.
Avoid, reduce, reorganize

The following remain as the basic goals of the Campaign in 2008:
  • achievement of greater compatibility of actions by trade and building engineering sector employers and employees with the European Directive No. 90/269/EEC concerning manual handling of loads on the territory of all European Union member states,
  • growth among the trade and building engineering sector employers and employees of the awareness of threats connected with manual handling of loads and the awareness of the existence of relevant counteractive measures,
  • change of the approach to the threats connected with manual transport work through the elimination of their sources instead of concentrating on the way people work,
  • unification and streamlining of methods of operation of inspectorates in various EU countries,
  • continuation of actions started in 2008 in health protection and transport sectors.

In order to achieve the goals envisaged for this year, the campaign concentrates on the following actions:
  1. Trainings for labour inspectors, preparing them to common inspections in all EU member states, carried out based on common, European methodical and training materials,
  2. Issuance of separate publications and information materials for building engineering and retail trade sectors,
  3. Information campaign using the Internet and mass media,
  4. Control campaign implemented on the basis of common guidelines based on the strategy of counteracting the risk of injury while handling loads,
  5. Advisory and promotional actions organised by domestic labour inspectorates.

In April 2009 the two-year campaign will be summed up during a seminar devoted to the exchange of experiences and good practices.
